1.  Connect To Avalanche/Reflector Administrative Port:

  1. Configure a laptop or workstation with the IP address and subnet mask: 192.168.42.1/255.255.255.0.
  2. Connect the laptop or workstation to Avalanche’s administrative Ethernet port with a crossover cable or through a (preferably full-duplex) network switch or hub.

  1. To turn on the Avalanche 2500, press and hold the power button for 3 seconds. For the Avalanche 220, turn on the power switch. For either model, wait 2-3 minutes for the unit to fully start up.

2.  Install the Avalanche Commander

Run the Avalanche installation program on your PC and follow the instructions in the InstallShield Wizard.  Note: The installation CD was shipped with your order.

3.  Run the Avalanche Commander

Select the Start > Programs > Spirent Communications > Avalanche > Avalanche Commander menu item on your PC or double-click the Avalanche Commander icon on your desktop.

4.  Install the License Key File

When prompted with ‘License Error’ window below click ‘Browse’ and locate the license file that was shipped with your order on a floppy disk.  Note: You can skip this step by clicking ‘Enter Demo Mode.’
However, if you use Demo Mode, you are limited to a total test time of 100 seconds.

5.  Change Administrative Port’s IP, Subnet, and Gateway Settings

A.      Select Administration > Appliances from the menu bar.

The Appliance Administration window is displayed

B.      Click the Add Appliance button and enter 192.168.42.2, the factory default IP address for Avalanche.  Note: When configuring Reflector you must enter 192.168.42.3 in this field.

C.      Once successfully added, click the Network Configuration tab and modify the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway fields to configure the appliance’s desired administrative network settings.

Note: The choices for Bootup Mode include Fixed IP or DHCP. If you change this field to DHCP, the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway fields will be determined for you.
If you use DHCP, it is highly suggested that you create a DNS entry for Avalanche and Reflector.

D.     Click Save and then Close at the bottom of the Appliance Administration window.  Wait 2-3 minutes for the appliance to reboot.

6.  Disconnect From Administrative Port and Re-Cable

Disconnect the cable from the appliance’s administrative port and reconnect as appropriate for your new network configuration settings. Ensure that your laptop or workstation running Avalanche Commander has access to the appliance.

You are now ready to create and run your tests using the Avalanche Commander GUI.
