How to Setup the SmartBits 600/6000 Chassis

Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide step-by-step instructions on how to configure the terminal server
and setup the following on the SmartBits chassis:

• IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway
  
• Speed and Duplex of the Smartbits controller card

Prerequisites

Requirements

• Terminal server (eg. Hyperterminal, TeraTerm) connected to the SmartBits console
• Serial cable with DB-25 interface (supplied with the chassis - for pinouts, click here)
• Ethernet interface of the SmartBits controller card connected to the network
• Available IP address to be assigned to the SmartBits chassis

Components Used

• SmartBits 6000C Chassis
• Hyperterminal (Windows XP)
• Serial cable with DB-25 interface (supplied with the chassis)

Configuring the terminal port settings

Step 1: Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, Hyperterminal
Step 2: Name the icon, SMB
Step 3: In the "Connect To" window, click the "Connect Using" drop down menu and select the correct COM port

Step 4: Configure the COM port settings as show below

• Bits per second: 38400
  
• Data bits: 8
  
• Parity: None
• Flow Control: Xon / Xoff
  

Step 5: Click OK and it should automatically connect to the chassis

Configuring the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and speed/duplex

Step 6: Enter Super User mode by typing at the prompt, SU, and enter the default password, SMB-6000 (case-sensitive)
Step 7: Set the chassis IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and hard-code the speed/duplex to 10/half

NOTE: It is recommended to hard-code the speed and duplex to 10/half.

The following will be used in this example:

• IP address: 10.10.10.10
• Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
• Default gateway: 10.10.10.1
• Speed/duplex 10Mbps/half-duplex
