Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide a user step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade
firmware and RPM files on a SmartBits 600/6000 chassis.

Note: RPM files are only required if TeraRouting Tester (TRT) support is needed.

Prerequisites

Requirements

The following are required prior to installing firmware on the chassis

Components Used

The following components were used in this sample upgrade

NOTE: Before starting, make sure the chassis is set to 10Mbps half-duplex (see below)


Launching Download Manager

Locating Download Manager

Step #1: Open Windows explorer, and go to the directory where firmware was installed

(C:\Program Files\SmartBits\Firmware\SMB6X) is the default

Step #2: Find “fdlmgr.exe and double click it…window below opens up


Setting the Preferences and Superuser password

Step #3: Click on the small chassis icon
In the window that opens, type in the chassis IP address, and make sure you are able to PING it
Click OK

Step #4: Go to Superuser access mode
Click on Actions, Preferences

Check "Enter SMB Superuser mode"
Password is SMB-6000 (case sensitive)


 

Loading Firmware on the Chassis and Modules

Connect to the chassis

Step #5: Click the Connect icon or hit F8

Select the modules and start the download

Step #6: Click on green “LED” next to the card (or controller) you want to upgrade (to reserve it)… LED turns blue
Click on the Download button to begin downloading the Firmware
Red flames will appear on the screen while the flash is being burned; Several messages appears as it progresses.
You will be advised at the end if the upgrade was successful. A reboot will be required.

NOTE: Do not interrupt after the upgrade has started.

Loading RPM files on the modules

Getting ready to load the RPM files

NOTE: Steps #6-7 are optional. Proceed only if RPM files are needed (used for TRT, etc)

Step #6: Select the "Software (RPM)" tab and click the Green LED next to the module requiring the RPM file

Step #7: Click on Files and select "Add to All Reserved Modules"
By default, RPM files are located in the default directory where TRT is installed
C:\Program Files\SmartBits\TRT Interactive\RPM

Note: FOR TRT 6.00 and above:
          RPM file trt-6.00.022.rpm is for the newer TeraMetrics cards (e.g. LAN-33xx, LAN-3721-A) 
          RPM file trt-16.00.022.rpm is for the older TeraMetrics cards  (e.g. LAN-3311A, LAN-3301A)

Click on the Download button and confirm by clicking OK. A notification will be provided after the file has been installed

NOTE: Do not interrupt the service after the installation has started.
